Wisdom #11: Did you know that sponge
balls make great cat toys? Well, at least cats think so. Because of this
fact, sponge balls turn up missing in my house. I usually find them under the couch
in various forms of mutilation. But, in all cases, by the time I find them they
are very, very dirty.
The first time this
happened, I thought that I might as well throw it away. After all, it was very, very dirty. But then,
I thought, if I'm going to throw it away, I might as well try things that most
likely will destroy it. Things I always wanted to do, like hollow one out, set
one on fire, all in the name of science, of course.
Well, sad to say,
none of those experiments produced anything usable, so I decided to try to wash
it. It turns out you CAN wash sponge balls! They won't dissolve or have a bad
reaction with the soap. They won't fade or discolor. They WILL get very clean,
and BIG! I had some that were so dirty they were black. After washing, they
were better than new - AND 50% BIGGER AS WELL!
One drop of dish
soap and lukewarm water. Work the soap into the sponge ball with your hands.
Rinse with cold water. Ring out well (no need to be gentle). Then remove as
much water as possible by blotting with lots of paper towels. Then set them
aside to completely dry in the air.
Not only a wonderful tip, but it seems to make them better than they were new. Could you do this to start off so that they are fluffier?
ReplyDeleteYes you can! When the balls are brand new, not even dirty, I will wash them. Just to get the size enhancement!
ReplyDeleteAnother tip: Dogs love spongy balls.
ReplyDeleteI accidentally forgot to remove a ball from my pocket and luckily found it before it went in to the dryer. It's much larger than the other three and now I have to wash those. lol

J LOL I have no idea what would have happened with a sponge ball in the dryer! Good thing you found it! And yes all of your sponge balls should be washed at the same time so that they are the same size.
